We are getting close to our fall conferences here in my Chicago suburb and it got me thinking about some of the questions I liked to ask families during my classroom days. Conferences are typically centered on what is happening in the classroom, but during that first set of meetings, I often shifted the focus to the families and the student. I would ask how they thought the year was going, what “wins” they had experienced, what questions they had and so on. Many of my students didn’t have reliable ways to communicate with me, so getting that information was key to school success. If you can relate to this scenario, I have created a form that you can download and use for family conferences, IEPs, or other parent/guardian meetings.
